Chapter 2 – The Giant Pizza

November 30, 2008

Rhett Crisko lent back in his swivel leather armchair, and fumbled distractedly with his prize possession, a leather flying cap with goggles personally autographed by his hero, Captain Ace P. Lott. So the leather had had to be replaced over the years, and the signature had faded to a few grubby marks, but still, it was the thought that counted! His office was neat and tidy, and decorated with a minimal touch, usually a location for peace and solitude. But today, something was in the air, and it polluted the serene ambiance of his chambers. Crisko was the commander of the station and a Captain in the Terran Galactic Starforce, sandy-haired with a firm jaw. He had been a member of the elite military force for a number of years now and was considered the Old Man of the fleet even if he was one of the younger ones.
He longed to be a freighter pilot: the military life was not his idea of fun. In fact it always annoyed him that he kept getting promoted when all he was trying to do was avoid being sacked.
And this gnawing feeling of imminent trouble didn’t help. Read the rest of this entry »

Primary Presentation day

November 30, 2008

So today was our primary presentation in sacrament meeting.  For those of you who have kids in it you know what is like, you cringe, you laugh, you find yourself cheering them on.  This of course maybe the case for everyone but as a parent I watch my children during these events waiting for three things:

1. The wave, when your sunbeam waves as soon as he sees you even if he is supposed to be singing. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter 1 – Into the Fat

November 30, 2008

The Universe is a big place. Take our word for it, it is. In fact, there’s not only a lot of space, what with the pasta and the anti-pasta, and a certain amount of fat, but there’s quite a bit of time, as well.
And the unfortunate thing about time is that it’s a bit messy. You have things like the ‘past’ and the ‘future’ snapping at the heels of the ‘present’, the only sane one amongst them. You see, you know where you are with the present: it’s right there beside you, pretty clear cut, and no nonsense. Yet even so, time keeps moving, anarchically keeping one on the hop, with the skill of a renegade military organisation. Read the rest of this entry »

Prologue

November 29, 2008

It was a lovely Monday morning. The sky was a brilliant blue, the birds were singing brightly, people were smiling gaily. And Nick was walking into work. Which, of course, is the way of things because it always poured with rain during the weekend. Nick was a tall, lanky man, handsome in a floppy fringe and easy-grin sort of way, formerly from Croydon, who had joined the call centre in Cardiff only recently, much to the disgust of his father who had a “proper job” in the postal service. Political shenanigans causing a special type of gridlock

November 29, 2008

North of the US border Canadian politics is locked in a huge death struggle that began at the end of the 2004 federal election, continued now through two more elections and little real progress.  Everyone says, wouldn’t it be great to have a minority government because they have to listen to “us” more.

So now we are on our third minority government (1 Liberal, 2 Conservative) and it seems even more bitter and partisan then ever.

A little background here: Read the rest of this entry »

From me to you

November 28, 2008

Just to let everyone know.  Today, this blog has surpassed the monthly mark for pages read.  I thank each one of you who read this blog.  You have given me plenty to think about and discuss over the past year.  It is amazing.

I was looking on Alexa.com the other day and I noted something.  I wanted to list this for each of you to look at because you might want to compare your own sites or you are just interested in playing around.

According to Alexa, Banner Sword and Shield ranks as the 8,583,051busiest website.

By Contrast I have put a list of some of the bigger Mormon sites (blogs) out there so you get a comparison:

LDS.org - 2,965

Mormon Times (Deseret News) 86,742

By Common Consent 321,798

Times and Seasons 406,767

Feminist Mormon Housewives 453,287

Mormon Matters 498,611

Mormon Mentality 668,495

Juvenile Instructor 3,193,386

So yes a ways to go yet but interesting nonetheless.
